arthur. then two people killed on 72nd avenue and international boulevard. that is where bob redell joins us live on what has become a deadly day in oakland. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla and jon. we spoke to a resident who said they wondered what is going on. four gun deaths within the city limits since 9:00 last night. all young men in their late teens or early 20s. two killed on 72nd avenue where we are right now. a residential street. a couple of blocks away from international boulevard. these men were in a green minivan on the street. a van that one of the passengers bought within the past day. at 6:00 as the sun was coming up this morning, someone walked up to the van and there was a confrontation. this person fired multiple shots at them killing them both here on the scene. police tell us they don't have a motive. they are still looking for that suspect. a neighbor of one of the men said the two regularly sat out in a vehicle just to talk. weren't loud. were respectful. from her point of view, seemed to stay out of trouble. >> this is the first time we ever had any ki

up hope. search crews will find their missing loved ones lost at sea. we have bob redell near the san mateo coast where the boat capsized just yesterday. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. signs of hope that those two men might have made it to shore. we spoke with a member of the family. they told us that last night they did find two articles of clothing. two jackets. not life jackets, but regular jackets between the pigeon point light house and the wreckage a mile north of here looking in the direction you are looking at right now. that is one reason both families are back out here this morning looking for their loved ones. so is the coast guard. one of the helicopters has been buzzing up the san mateo county shore line searching for the men. they were on the 18 foot fishing boat that capsized this morning. four men, all friends and fishermen, were a mile out when at 10:30 yesterday morning, a large wave toppled them and their boat sending everyone in the cold surf. two of the men had life jackets and they made it to shore and alerted the authorities. the other two we

. homicides number 35 and 36 this year alone. bob redell is live at the police department. you just attended a press conference there, getting more information about the latest run of violence. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. san jose in the past has prided itself on being america's safest big city has just racked up homicides number 35 and 36 for the year. police believe one of them is gang-related. when we spoke with sapd within the past hour, the officer wondered if the city's still had its gang tax force if that task force was still intact. a group of friends were celebrating one of their birthdays outside a house. one of them tells us two member, gang members, he believes, barged into the party and shot and killed his friend. a man in his 30s with a wife and child. he doesn't understand why his friend would be targeted, says he wasn't a gang-banger. described him as being too old for that kind of lifestyle. >> we were hanging out. there was no gang-bangers involved. there was nobody that gang-bangs here with no colors whatsoever. just outside barbecuing. all yo

'll start off with our live coverage with bob redell and the fleet week festivities. what's going on, my man? >> reporter: good morning to you, john. we're aboard the u.s.s. macon island. tours of this vessel here in san francisco start in just under 24 hours from now. one thing that will strike you is just how large she is. at 850 feet long, she's only a couple hundred feet shorter than an aircra carrier. her flight deck, as you can see, can handle lots of helicopters. it's an assault ship capable of carrying 1,000 sailors and a detachment of 1200 marines. some of whom you just saw. her yeek anemic feature is the well deck. it can be filled with water and slunk slightly so hovers can come and go through the ship's rear. >> the assault ships were designed to be able to put the marines where we need to put them and storm the beach. since that time, they have taken on a whole new mission set for disaster response. the same way that we get the marines to shore, we can get that humanitarian assistance like relief supplies, we can do that. ships like this were used in new orleans after hurricane

actually come together. >> bob redell is already checking out the action. he's checking out one of those lightweight sail boats and today he's on board the heavy equipment. joining us live from the uss macon island which is right there in san francisco. bob, sounds like a big bash. >> reporter: yeah, this is what you might call a small ship. it's only over 800 feet in length. we're on the uss macon island, we're actually below deck where you can see they have some of the u.s. marines equipment. the marines typically deploy with these type of ships. this is an amphibious assault ship. one size smaller than an aircraft carrier to give you some perspective. this is the well deck. right in the back here you can see they have got two hover craft here on this deck in the situation if they need it so they can submerge it into the water so the hover craft can leave. we've got senior chief don ryan. hey, good morning and thanks for being with us. >> hey, good morning. >> reporter: i'm trying to get an idea what kind of scenario you would have being deployed here. >> well, we are an amphibious ass

than a week ago. bob redell joins us live outside parkside elementary school. bob, will parents notice these changes as soon as they drop off their kids this morning? >> reporter: absolutely. some of those changes went into effect last week. the idea they would all bow implemented by today. one of the most obvious is you can see they have got a new gate that's been installed here, so this dpat agate and all the oths will be locked. you might notice that the fence is pretty short, it's still hopable, but that's an issue the school is still looking at, whether they want to raise the fence. some of the other new security measures going into effect today here, locked gates. there's only one entrance for people coming to campus. that's the main entrance. they're using that as a choke point so they can keep track of who's coming an going. no one is allowed on campus to pick up or drop their children. they must be dropped off at the front entrance. and all visitors must sign in and wear a badge. these new measures are in response to what happened ten days ago. on friday the 21st, police say b

in washington today, bill. >> for sure. amon, thank you. i'll take it. bob has been all over this high-speed trading story from the get go. anything getting accomplished here, bob? >> yeah, there is. so this wasn't so much about high-frequency trading. it was really about dealing with all these technology problems. look what happened with night. they had a program that started. number one, the code was written wrong. that was the first problem. after it started running, they couldn't shut it down. so there was two problems. one was there was a software glitch, and they talked today about developing better practices for developing more consistent code. you need to write the code better. that's number one. they discussed that. number two, what about the program that started running and they couldn't shut it down? that's what the kill switch is about. so i think it's a very good idea to have a kill switch. you got to figure out under what circumstances you're going to use it, but believe it or not, that was a major problem. it ran 45 minutes in the case of night. nobody was able to shut i

services. yesterday, bob mcdonnell signed a bill that requires women to have the ultrasound's prior to having an abortion. this was supposed to be a transvaginal ultrasound. 300 women's rights groups to to the streets of the capitol in richmond, va., on saturday and they were matched by cops. i saw a little girl that was on the steps with about 10 cops. a protest is taking place as we speak in idaho over a similar law. in alabama, one of the ultrasound bills can be and is president of the company that sells the equipment to do the ultrasound. you have to follow the money. there are connections to the american legislative exchange council, when you fall and connect the dots. she is putting stories together about who is behind all this legislation. it is very similar. we have seven ultrasound laws on the books. so many more are racing to the legislature. yesterday, democratic women senators in georgia staged a walkout to protest to measures that would limit access to services and contraception. i want to read a couple of headlines. ohio remains on the front lines of the abortion debat

for bob [speaker not understood] who some of you may know, was a first generation san francisco an who married and raised four children here including community leader sam ladder. after graduating from u.c. berkeley and hastings law school, bob joined a family firm and became active in numerous civic organizations, particularly within the jewish community as well as on our san francisco human rights commission. he also had a love of politics and successfully ran the mccarthy campaign for the board of supervisors. and i know that he will be missed dearly by the community and his family. my third in memoriam is for gary cray who is known by many in the telegraph hill community, my district, as the filbert steps gardner. gary tended to the gardens of the filbert steps, which is one of our city's great hidden treasures for more than three decades. and he took care of the sprawling garden as a volunteer. it was truly a labor of love for him and he was never paid a dime for t. he worked his hearts -- poured his heart into his work to create a clean, green and serene space that many in my nei
